Home Religious Education High School HS Curriculum

The 8th-10th Grades will meet weekly (see front page for schedule). The school year has two semesters and each semester has 5-6 Core Electives from which our 8th-10th Grade students can choose. Our High School will be operating on a rotating schedule. Three consecutive weeks will be formal, regular classroom experiences, followed by one week of informal educational/social experiences. The 11th- 12th Grades will meet twice a month. Once a month, they will have a formal educational experience with the Rabbi from 7:05-8:00 pm, though they are welcomed to join the rest of the High School for our dessert social from 6:45-7:05 before their class begins. The other meeting will be with the rest of the High School from 5:30-8:00 pm when we have our informal educational/social experience.


8th/9th/10th Grade Core Classes: 5:50-6:45 (55 Min) 8th Grade: Jewish Identity and Connecting with Israel Miss Laura will take our students on a journey which will begin with Ancient Israel and continue through Modern Day Israel. Students will self-identify with the Jewish people and the Land of Israel. The class will be conducted through Active Learning techniques including; games, art projects, role play, etc. 9th Grade: PB&J-Tough Teen Jewish Questions Mr. Kaplan will provide a safe environment for our teens to explore difficult Jewish questions. This class will provide our teens with insight into these topics from PB&J-Pluralistic Branches of Judaism. We will also invite guest speakers who represent these different Jewish backgrounds. 10th Grade: Confirmation Class – with Rabbi Aft Students meet weekly with Rabbi Aft to discuss “Jewish Hot Topics.” They will also be preparing for Confirmation with our Confirmation Coordinator, Jodi Premack second semester.

8th/9th/10th Grade Core Electives*: 7:05-8:00 (55 Min) 8th/9th/10th Grade: Conversational Hebrew – with Mr. Price Students will learn conversational Hebrew while meeting Israeli teens along the way. The class will have weekly readings, activities, games, and food. The students will learn how to speak basic “tourist” Hebrew, order food, and travel around Israel. They will also learn current slang that Israeli teenagers use day-to-day in Israel.


8th/9th/10th Grade:Teenage “Hot Topics” from a Jewish Perspective – with Miss Laura and Rabbi Aft Students will grapple with issues such as drugs, sex, peer-pressure, anti-Semitism, news and media from a Jewish perspective. Weekly topics will be brought in by the teachers. This class will be conducted through a question/answer forum. Students will lead the discussion with teacher/adult guided practice.


8th/9th/10th Grade: Jewish Cooking/Culture/Music (Ashkenazic and Sephardic Traditions) – with Mr. Kaplan. This class will be designed for the students to learn about traditional recipes, their origins, the culture and arts of these different lands and of course learn to cook! The students will compile a Jewish cookbook over the duration of the course and bring in their family “famous” recipes.


11th and 12th Grade: Post Confirmation Class – with the Rabbi Students will meet once a month with the Rabbi and discuss how they can make a difference in the world by doing G’milut Chasadim (acts of loving kindness). This class will culminate in a social action/Tikkun Olam project. They will also work closely with our Tikkun Olam Coordinator, Jodi Premack, throughout the year on social action projects. *More Core Electives to come.
