What Does Log B'Omer Teach us About Respect
Wednesday, May 2, 2018 • 17 Iyyar 5778
6:00 PM - 7:30 PMLag b’Omer is the 33rd day of the Counting of the Omer, the seven-week period between Passover and Shavuot (law revelation). The holiday commemorates two events. 1) Lag B’Omer marks the anniversary of the death of a great Torah scholar, Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, who brought forth the teachings of mysticism into the world. 2) Lag' B'Omer also marks the conclusion of a period of mourning due to a plague that had afflicted a number of Rabbi Akiva's students who were gossiping and treating each other disrespectfully. Thus, Lag BaOmer also carries the theme of loving and respecting one’s fellow. How do we teach respect and did Rabbi Akiva somehow drop the ball? What can we do to teach respect?
