Rabbi Aft's Weekly Message - Graduation, A Time for Hope

06/24/2016 09:32:04 AM

Dear Friends,

Tonight is one of my favorite Shabbat services.  At our Folk Service tonight, we will be honoring our graduates.  I know that many of our graduates are at beach week and our college and graduate school graduates are out of town, but I hope that those of you reading this column will share it with them.

How many of us remember the dreams we had when we graduated from high school, college, professional school, graduate school, trade school, military training, or whatever education programs in which we participated?  We were filled with enthusiasm and some of us had a belief that we would change the world.

As we age, some of that enthusiasm wanes and we get caught up in the routines of life.  We struggle to make a living, we balance work and family obligations, we realize that college isn't just fun times but that we have to go to class and do projects, take tests, and other things that are reality checks.  And yet...graduation marks a time for hope...

I hope that some of the following quotes will inspire us to find renewed energy that either revitalizes or encourages our dreams that we can make a difference.  Each quote, in its own way, has influenced decisions that I have made in my life and I hope you find them to be meaningful.  I will share others tonight at services that have influenced me in my journey through life.

Mazel tov to all our graduates and please send us your cell phone numbers, your latest e-mail address, and your current mailing address wherever you will be living in the fall.  Please send this information to me at so that we can keep in contact with you.

Shabbat shalom,

Rabbi Bruce Aft

Don't always worry what your next line is going to be.

Richard Costolo

You have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your intuition. You can't get there by bus, only by hard work and risk and by not quite knowing what you're doing, but what you'll discover will be wonderful. What you'll discover will be yourself.
