Just in time for Chanukah cards!The religious school is hosting a family photoshoot fundraiser on November 7th and November 14th at the synagogue. Proceeds from the event will go towards the religious school. The sitting fee is FREE! You’ll only pay for the photos you purchase, and you’ll receive your pictures within 3-5 days. 2021 will make 20 years for Team Adat Reyim! CROP Walk is an interfaith national effort to raise awareness and funds to fight hunger both locally and globally.

While there is no Burke area walk this year, let’s gather our family and friends for the first ever Adat Reyim Hunger Walk!

Date: Sunday, November 14, 2021
Place: Meet at Adat Reyim Parking Lot. We will walk on sidewalks near the synagogue and then enjoy refreshments in the parking lot.
Time: 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Length of walk: 2-2.5 miles
Purpose: To help raise money for the many people in our area who are in need of food.

Thank you to everyone to who attended Consecration last Friday night. It was a wonderful evening and we are so proud of both of our 3rd and 4th grade students. Thank you to our teachers, Morah Andrea Cate and Morah Melanie Berman, our Madrichim, Jackie Krug and Rachael Getz, Larry Kugler and Shir Reyim, Rabbi Glazer, and everyone else who made that night possible.

Tonight at 6:30 PM is our annual Consecration ceremony where we will be honoring our third grade students who are beginning a new stage of their Jewish education as they enter our more intensive, two-day per week program. They are being welcomed to our community of learners by our fourth grade students, who took this significant step forward last year. We are so excited to be celebrating both classes tonight and we hope that you are able to be there in person or on Zoom. Our first week of religious school has come and gone and it was truly amazing! I was thrilled to see our students in person on Sunday morning and all of our families on Zoom for minyan. We encourage our families to join us for minyan on Wednesdays at 5:30 PM, which is led by Rabbi Glazer or Moreh Lefkowitz. All Zoom links can be found on our website on the religious school page.

A few important things to note...

There is religious school THIS SUNDAY, October 10th from 9:00-11:15 AM.

Remind- Text Messaging System
Over the past week, I have set up the school on the text messaging system Remind. Many of you already use it for other reasons or have in the past. You can either download the free app or use it as a text messaging system. We will be using Remind to send you message in the event of inclement weather, emergency messages, etc. If you need to reach me on Sunday mornings during school, this is the best way to do so. You can also send me an email but because I will be walking around the building to moitor classes, sending me a message on Remind will be the best way to ge ahold of me. We will also be using Remind to send a message every Sunday morning with the link to fill out the health questionnaire. Please remember, it is a requirement to attend school on Sunday mornings that you fill out a health questionnaire for every child. Carpool Pick Up Parent Volunteer Requirement
One of the things we require our parents in our religious school to do is to find ways to give back to our community. We are in need of five parents to help us with managing carpool pick up every Sunday morning. We will be requiring each family to sign up for a minimum of three (3) Sundays throughout the school year to help with carpool pickup. This could include managing traffic as cars come in or calling out names on the walkie talkie as children come out of the building. From the Teachers
-The staff have asked me to relay a few helpful suggestions to our parents to prepare for the weeks to come. Please make sure you send your child to school with a full water bottle. We have shut off our water fountains for COVID safety reasons. We do have mini water bottles for emergency use if needed.
-We also will be trying to spend as much time as possible outside for classes. Please make sure your child is properly dressed to be sitting outside depending on the weather that morning.
-Lastly, please make sure you send your child to religious school with a tight fitting mask that covers their nose and mouth. We have a few children-sized maks onsite if needed.

Grade Shabbat Updates
We have unfortunately decided to postpone the grade shabbat programs that were scheduled to occur in November (K/1st) and December (2nd/3rd) until the Spring. We are hopeful that the vaccine roll out for children ages 5-11 will begin in the next few weeks and then we will be able to have unvaccinated children inside the building outside of religious school hours. We will update those grades with new dates later in the season. Thank you for your patience and understanding on this matter.

This Sunday is a non-Ruach day- drop off will be as follows:
The carpool line will go around the circle where Madrichim will be waiting to greet the students of their classes. Madrichim will then walk students to their classrooms as they arrive so we can keep the kids from being together in large groups. Please look out for the signs of your child's grade of where they should go. Thank you for your patience as we get into the groove of pick up and drop off over the next several Sundays.

Tonight is the first evening for our Wednesday night virtual religious school for our 3rd-7th graders. As a friendly reminder, here is the schedule for this evening:

5:30-6:00 Minyan (3rd-7th grade and families)
6:00-6:10 Break
6:10-7:10 Classes

If you are new to our mid-week program, our minyan is led by either Rabbi Glazer or Moreh Gary Lefkowitz, accompanied by Larry Kugler and/or Brad Cheney on guitar. Families are always welcome and encouraged to attend minyan with their children on Wednesday nights. Tonight it will be led by Rabbi Glazer and Larry Kugler.

Below you will find the Zoom links for all of the classes as well as the Zoom link for minyan. I will not be sending out the links every week however, you can always find them on our website at the bottom of our religious school page. **You will need to login to your shulcloud account to view the links for safety reasons. If you have any trouble logging on this evening, please send me a quick email or message on Remind.

1.     I agree to sign on in a timely fashion. If I know I will be late, I will do my best to notify my teacher in advance.

First Day of Religious School- This Sunday at 9:00 AM

Shabbat Shalom Everyone,

The time has finally arrived! Our first day of religious school has come! This Sunday, October 3rd is our first day of school for our Kindergarten-6th grade students. Classes are from 9:00-11:15 AM. We also have Ruach (for students only) beginning at 9:00 AM this Sunday.

Please don't forget the following:

1. Fill out our RS Covid Questionnaire for every child, before dropping off. Questionnaire can be found here: https://www.adatreyim.org/form/RS-covid-questions.html
2. IMPORTANT pick up and drop off instructions are found below
3. All students must be in a tightly fitted mask
4. No food (only water and/or juice boxes allowed)
5. We will be sitting outside for Ruach so please be dressed appropriately
6. If your child, or anyone in your home is sick, please stay home and protect us all

This year we are only doing carpool drive thru for pick up and drop off. It is also important to remember to please make sure you are wearing your masks at all times and when possible, please stay in your car to keep the line moving.

Pick Up:
When you arrive to pick up your child(ren), please have a piece of paper with the students last name and grade(s) written in BIG, BOLD letters placed in the window of the car. We will then call your child out to the carpool line. If you would like to park and walk up to pick up your child(ren), please find someone with a walkie-talkie so they can call your childs name and grade.

Drop Off:

On Ruach days:
- For the fall, we will plan to have Ruach under the tent in the parking lot so the carpool line will not continue all the way down to the circle. Please follow the directions of the "traffic controllers" when you arrive on Sunday mornings. Students will get out of their cars and go directly to the tent and sit with their classes. Teachers will be waiting for their students there. This will be how the first day of school will go as well.

On Non-Ruach days:
-The carpool line will go around the circle where Madrichim will be waiting to greet the students of their classes. Madrichim will then walk students to their classrooms as they arrive so we can keep the kids from being together in large groups. Good Evening Religious School Families,

It was wonderful to meet most of you at our Sukkot family program on Sunday. It felt so good to be together as one school community again. I look forward to having more experiences for us to gather as a group again throughout the school year! We have lots of new families this year and I was thrilled to be able to welcome everyone to our congregation in-person for our first event of the year.

Before our first day of school next Sunday, October 3rd, I wanted to give you some information about how pick up and drop off will work. This year we are only doing carpool drive thru for pick up and drop off. It is also important to remember to please make sure you are wearing your masks at all times and when possible, please stay in your car to keep the line moving.

Pick Up:

Adat Reyim Religious School Sukkot Event- This Sunday!

We are thrilled to finally be reunited with our Adat Reyim Religious School community again this Sunday at our Sukkah Decorating Event! Please join us this Sunday, September 19th from 10:00-11:00 AM. This event is for current registered students and their families only. Please make sure all who are attending are wearing masks at all times and maintaining social distancing. This event will be taking place outside in the front parking lot. If you haven’t registered your child(ren) for the 2021-2022 school year, please do that before Sunday so you can attend our program and meet our staff! Join us for Sukkah decoration making, a fun-filled song session, and a Lulav and Etrog demonstration! You can register by clicking here.

I hope you all have had a safe, healthy, and fun summer! I am so happy to be back from maternity leave and am looking forward to the beginning of the school year! Thank you to everyone who has sent their kind well wishes to our family and for our new baby, Sophie. We are truly blessed and can’t wait for the rest of the Adat Reyim community to meet her soon.

Our staff has spent the past few week in professional development sessions getting ready for the school year and let me tell you, we have lots ruach and we can't wait to get our students back with us again! While I have seen many of you at our High Holiday programming, I haven’t had a chance to see everyone in person yet so please make sure you join us for our religious school Family Sukkah Decorating event next Sunday, September 19th at 10 AM. This event is for current registered students and their families only. If you haven’t registered your child(ren) for the 2021-2022 school year, please do that before Sunday so you can attend our program and meet our staff! Join us for Sukkah decoration making, a fun-filled song session, and a Lulav and Etrog demonstration for all ages! You can register by clicking here.

Since I have returned, the religious school reopening committee has had a chance to meet. We took a lot of the policies we are enforcing from the FCPS guidelines, as you will see below. We would like to share our COVID-19 safety protocols as follows:

1.       All Sunday morning classes (K-6th grade) will be held indoors. We will be maintaining social distancing (3 feet) at all times.
2.       Masks will be required for all students and staff, indoors and outdoors.
3.       NO FOOD will be allowed inside the building at this time. Students may be allowed to bring a water bottle or juice box to school.
4.       Parents will not be allowed in the building.
5.       All staff members and Madrichim will be fully vaccinated or will be COVID tested weekly.
6.       We will be implementing a short health questionnaire, similar to what the Adat Reyim preschool has. Every morning, before you drop off your child(ren) you must take their temperature and fill out this health form. You will get a text message every morning as a reminder. More information on that to come soon.
7.       If child or staff member has any symptoms, they may not attend religious school. If we see that a child has symptoms when they arrive, we will contact a parent to have them picked up immediately.
8.       If a member of the household of the student or staff member tests positive, that child or staff member may not attend school. We will follow FCPS as far as any kind of quarantine is concerned.
9.       If a student is “paused” at their secular school for COVID quarantine, they are also not allowed to come to religious school until they are cleared to attend their secular school. You are obligated to inform the Adat Reyim Religious Education Director if your child is in quarantine, tests positive, or has a household member that is in quarantine or tests positive.
10.   Ruach will take place once a month and will be held outdoors until further notice. This will be for students only.

Sundays (In-Person) Kindergarten-6th grade: 9:00-11:15 AM
Wednesdays (on Zoom) 3rd grade-7th grade: 5:30-7:10 PM

I hope you all are enjoying your Summer vacation so far!

I wanted to send you all a quick email with some updates. We are thrilled to introduce to you the 2021-2022 religious school calendar! Our first event will be taking place on Sunday, September 19th with an in-person family Sukkot celebration! You will receive more information about this event in late August. Our first day of Sunday classes will be Sunday, October 3rd and our first day of Wednesday classes is Wednesday, October 6th.

*Our 7th grade families will receive an additional calendar for their specific online and in-person classes so please stay tuned for that soon! There are in-person events that are not added to the calendar yet due to COVID restrictions but we plan to add them throughout the year and will keep you updated as those events come to fruition. These events include the 6th & 7th grade field trips to the Richmond Holocaust Museum and Ellis Island.

I also would like to give you an update on our plans for in-person classes for Sundays. At this moment, it is our hope to be in-person on Sundays from 9:00-11:15 AM. The reopening committee is working especially hard to make sure that our students and staff can be together safely and they will be revealing what those details look like later in September. I am also happy to introduce our new schedule for our online Wednesday program. After sending out our survey to all the families, the religous school committee, along with the support of the Rabbi and staff, we came to the conclusion for the schedule below:

6:00-6:10 PM- break
6:10-7:10 PM- classes

Lastly, some of you may not know but I am about to go on maternity leave in the next week or so. Religious School End of Year Event- This Sunday!

The time has come. It is our end of the year celebration! While we are truly sad that this will be our last program together for the 2020-2021 school year, I know that next year is going to be a much brighter one for us all.

Please see the information below for the timing of when you are scheduled to arrive on Sunday. Please also don't forget to make your large signs, decorate your cars and wear your most fun masks to our event! Our teachers CAN'T WAIT to finally see you all in person and I am so thrilled to meet everyone as well! It has been a long time coming so this is an exciting moment for me personally.

There will be volunteers directing traffic so please make sure you are paying attention to them as they direct you where to pull up and stop. After you have had a chance to talk with your teachers and Madrichim, meet me, we will then direct you to another part of the parking lot to have your family picture taken on your way out. We can't wait to see you all there!

4th graders- You will be receiving your Consecration certificates at this event so please make sure not to leave without picking that up.

In the Chai Lights that went out yesterday, it mentioned that there was Ruach scheduled for this Sunday. Please note that there is NO RUACH this Sunday; our last Ruach session was last Sunday, 5/16.

Lastly, I announced last week that registration for the 2021-2022 school year has opened. An Important Religious School Update for the 2021-2022 School Year:

Greetings Families!

The Religious School Committee is excited to announce the following changes to the calendar for the 2021-2022 school year.

1. We are moving weekday instruction from Monday to Wednesday.
2. We are moving the 7th grade class to Wednesday to align with 3rd-6th graders.
3. The Wednesday educational program will be offered through online learning.

Move from Monday to Wednesday:
Congregation Adat Reyim Religious School has operated a weekly schedule of Sunday morning (PK-6), Sunday afternoon/evening (7th, 10th), and Monday evening (3-6). Many years ago, FCPS used to offer a half day Monday which is why the Monday evening worked for many families.

For many years, the Religious School Committee has investigated and surveyed families regarding the option of moving the weekday instruction from Monday to mid-week. Most recently, the Religious School Committee surveyed families on what options could work for them in the fall. We have incorporated the data from this survey, as well as evidenced-based research on how children learn best.

Moving 7th grade to Wednesday:
7th grade is an important year for our students. Most are studying for, or, celebrating their Bar/Bat Mitzvahs. They are both students and emerging adults in our Jewish community. We are moving 7th grade to align with 3-6 grade to continue to include them in our religious school community, as well as for them to serve as leaders and role models for our younger students.
***7th grade students will have monthly in-person learning and social opportunities as well as online class instruction.

Wednesdays will be offered via online learning:
Families have many competing obligations during the week. We have learned this past year that we have increased attendance and participation when we offer learning through an online platform.

In addition, our Religious Education Director, Leah Miller, as well as Rabbi Glazer, are working diligently on enhancing and updating our Hebrew curriculum to allow for greater time on task and more in-depth, detailed Hebrew instruction. Both Leah and Rabbi Glazer have implemented successful online Hebrew programs and we are excited for them to bring innovative Hebrew learning to Congregation Adat Reyim.

We are working diligently with executive leadership on being able to offer in-person instruction for all classes on Sunday mornings and as state recommendations and CDC Guidelines are revised, our leadership team will respond to future fluid situations . More information on that will be provided later in the Summer.

Hello Adat Reyim Religious School Families-

I am so excited to introduce myself as the new Religious Education Director at Congregation Adat Reyim! If you haven't had the chance to see me at one of the religious school classes, at Monday night minyan, or at the CAR Passover Seder, my name is Leah Miller, and I am beyond thrilled to be joining your community.

I have had the opportunity to meet a few of you (students and parents) at several points throughout the last few weeks including in my interviews, committee meetings, and in one-on-one meetings with other lay leaders and families. I have spent several weeks learning from Liz, our RS committee co-chairs Steven and Jessica, and other staff members learning what makes Adat Reyim tick, and I am so excited to begin this journey with all of you.

Over the next several months, I will be reaching out to each family to get to know you, your children, hear your experiences at Adat Reyim, as well as let you have a chance to know more about me on a personal level. There will also be other group opportunities for families to come together and meet with me as well. The Religious Education Director transition team has a lot of fun programs planned over the next few months so please be on the look out for more information about that soon.

A little background about me: I grew up in northern California and moved to the East Coast for graduate school. I made the journey to the DMV with my husband Michael, who is working in Arlington, and we have a 2-year-old son named Wesley. Currently we are living in Germantown, Maryland, but we hope to make a closer move to the area sometime this year.

From the few short weeks I have been part of the Adat Reyim community, I can already tell this is a special place to be. It truly is a community of friends, and I am honored to be part of it. I look forward to meeting you all soon in the Zoom room!

Dear Friends -

This Sunday, March 21 we will all join together for a Chocolate Seder. The Chocolate Seder is not meant to replace the regular seder but help learn and prepare for the real one. It worked out great for everyone to pickup their chocolate seder supplies and I think the text messages worked really well! If you didn't get a text message make sure your mobile number is in your synagogue membership account. The items in the seder bag are listed below in case you want to pick them up (or something close). The Seder will begin at 10:00am. Rabbi Glazer will lead the Seder and Morah Andrea and Morah Sariel will add their Ruach throughout the morning.

Sunday and Monday are also my last days of class with the students as we enter Passover/Spring Break. My last official day as Religious School Administrator is March 31st and Leah's first day is April 1st. The religiousschool@adatreyim.org email will then be forwarded to Leah at the eddirector@adatreyim.org email address so she won't miss anything.

I have truly enjoyed learning from all of our teachers, students and families. Your trust and friendship has meant the world to me and I will hold it close forever. I hope that you will continue to stay in touch with texting, Facebook etc. Instead of saying goodbye I will say L'hitraot, until we see each other again!

Hello Friends -

I am so excited to introduce my new best friend and yours too - Leah Miller. First and most importantly Leah pronouces her name like Jacobs first wife in the Bible or the Princess from Star Wars. I had the opportunity to be in a small break out group with her this summer when I took some classes through Mini-CAJE and I liked her then. It was a wonderful surprise when I sat in on the interviewing process and she was one of the candidates. In the first five minutes of her interview I knew she was the one. Leah used all my favorite words COMMUNITY, B'YACHAD, TOGETHER, COMMUNICATION. She talked about making the students experience in religous school a positive one so that they continued on her jewish journey into college and beyond.

Leah and I will continue to meet and overlap for the remainder of March. My last day of Religous School will be 3/21 and 3/22 and my last day as Religous School Administrator will be 3/31. Leah's official first day will be 4/1. Leah will be joining our classrooms this Sunday and Monday to introduce herself to our students and then at the end of our Chocolate Seder to introduce herself to all of you. I hope that you and your children will give Leah the warm Adat Reyim welcome that I have grown to love over the years. I have truly loved being a part of your children's lives these past two years and hope to stay in touch with you as a member of the community.

Dear Congregation Adat Reyim Religious School,

I am both excited and humbled to introduce myself as the new Religious Education Director at Congregation Adat Reyim. I am currently at my house in Maryland with my husband, Michael, our 2-year-old son Wesley, and our two cats, Gadget and Mister. While we all have been cooped up in our home for the past year (oy!), I have been on a journey to find the next step in my career and my next home away from home.

I was immediately drawn to Congregation Adat Reyim, and the meaning of the name of the synagogue itself, “community of friends.” Growing up as a Rabbi’s daughter, I have always believed that finding the right Jewish congregation is where you feel most at home and the most connected to your own personal Jewish journey. From the moment I met with the search committee, I experienced that warm and welcoming feeling that I was looking for, the community where I could call my next home. This is what I plan to instill in the youth of Congregation Adat Reyim, to give our students the tools to make their own informed choices after they graduate high school, go off to college, and become active members in their Jewish community, wherever life takes them.

I have a passion for working as a mentor to Jews of all ages and am committed to making a difference in the world, one B’nai Mitzvah (...and beyond!) at a time. I am excited to see what we will develop as a community, together. I would love to meet with you and hear more about your hopes for Jewish life and learning for the youth of Congregation Adat Reyim. On behalf of my family, thank you for welcoming us into your community, and I look forward to meeting you all on Zoom, and hopefully in-person very soon.

Hello Friends -

Happy March! Can you believe we have been doing this for almost a year? I want to acknowledge and celebrate what a wonderful our teachers and students have done adjusting to this change. Our attendance is actually better on ZOOM than it is in person. Maybe that is because we don't have as many extra-curricular activities that conflict but I will take it! Last weeks minyan attendance however, was lower than usual, please make sure your students are logging in to minyan after class.

It was great to see so many of you last night at the Megillah Reading! We always knew Mr. Lefkowitz is our hero but it is sure fun to see him in costume! What about Rabbi Glazer as a Wizard - Rabbi G Wizard of CAR! Purim is always so much fun! There is NO Sunday School this Sunday because we planned for the Purim Carnival - UGH Covid! Who would have thought almost a year later we would still be remote. We DO have school and minyan on Monday night. This past Monday minyan attendance was down, please remember minyan is manditory and although there is a break in between the students are expected to login!

Hello Friends -

This Sunday at 9am we will have Ruach - Purim Style - I hope you will join us in costume or funny hats! It is a required part of religious school and adds an element of learning that the students may not be getting in class! In addition, Morah Andrea and Morah Sariel take a lot of time and energy preparing a fun program for everyone! There are tons of other things going on Sunday. At 12:00pm Volunteers are packing Purim Boxes, see below for info, 1:00pm there is a Parking Lot Food Drive with Social Action, and at 3:00pm there is Hamentashen Baking with Rebecca Gibson!

I appreciate everyones participation in our Purim Project Fundraiser. We have a total revenue right now of over $9000! Of course we have expenses that we will need to deduct but I am so excited by this project, not only is it a fundraiser but we are connecting with each other through words of celebration. On Sunday I will be packing the boxes with volunteers and they will delivered on the 24th & 25th so watch outside for your boxes - wet hamentashen won't taste good!

Today is officially my last day as Executive Director. Please email me going forward at relgiousschool@adatreyim.org. Hello Friends -

By now many of you have seen the message sent out yesturday by Co-Presidents Rebecca Geller and Andrea Sobel regarding my resigning from the Executive Director position at Adat Reyim. I want to reasure you as Relgious School parents that I will continue as Religious School Administrator through the end of the year or until a new Administrator is hired. It was always the plan for someone new to take over the Religious School position next year. Interviews for the new Religious School Director position are underway, and there are some excellent candidates in the pipeline.

I care deeply for each and every one of our students, teachers, parents, and staff and will not abandoned our students. A lot of people have told me how much they will miss me but I want you to know that I will still be here, just not as an employee. I plan to continue to share lifes simchas and tsoris with you and your family into the future.

We now have 3 weeks of Religious School in a row - can you believe it?! We have Ruach at 9:00am on Sunday morning and I am looking forward to seeing you all there as we celebrate and learn about Tu B'shevat.
