Destruction & Renewal
What is Tisha b'Av?
Tisha b'Av is the most solemn day of the Jewish calendar, when Jews worldwide fast for a full day. Tradition and history tell us that many calamities befell the Jewish people on this day, the ninth of Av, including the destruction of both the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem
Zoom-only Service, July 17th, 8:00 pm
Included in our observance will be the chanting of Eicha, the Book of Lamentations. Before the service, participants should partake of hard-boiled eggs (a sign of mourning) dipped in "ashes" (spices).
Study Session
In addition, Dr. Maurice Mizrahi will lead a study session on "The Limits of Mourning." On Tish’a b’Av, Jews go into deep mourning for the loss of the Temple and all the other calamities that befell us on this fateful day in history. But how far is it proper and healthy to recall vividly all the catastrophes of the past?
