Tish'a b'Av
Wednesday, July 29, 2020 • 8 Av 5780
7:30 PM - 9:00 PMTish'a b'Av is the most solemn day of the Jewish calendar, when Jews worldwide fast for a full day. Tradition and history tell us that many calamities befell the Jewish people on this day, the ninth of Av, including the destruction of both the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem. Included in our observance will be the chanting of Eicha, the Book of Lamentations, by Martin Mould and Carolyn Kaplan. Before the service, participants should partake of hard-boiled eggs (a sign of mourning) dipped in "ashes" (spices) and recite Havdalah. In addition, Dr. Maurice M. Mizrahi will lead a study session on "Don't the Righteous Also Go Hungry?" The question refers to a line the Book of Psalms which we recite during Birkat Hamazon, the Grace After Meals: "I have been young, and I am now old; yet I have not seen the righteous abandoned, nor his seed begging for bread." [Ps. 37:25] The plain meaning can't be right. There are too many counterexamples. So what does it mean?
